What Is the K-ETA?
The K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization) is a pre-travel authorization required for citizens of 112 visa-free countries who wish to enter Korea for short stays (tourism, business, transit). It's similar to the U.S. ESTA or Australia's ETA — you apply online before you travel and receive approval electronically, linked to your passport.
Without K-ETA approval, you may be denied boarding at your departure airport, even if your nationality is normally visa-exempt for Korea.
Who Needs a K-ETA?
You need a K-ETA if:
- Your country has a visa-free agreement with Korea (see the full list at visa.go.kr)
- You're visiting Korea for tourism, business meetings, transit, or short-term activities (not work or study)
- Your stay will be 90 days or less
Major nationalities requiring K-ETA include: USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, most EU countries, Japan, and Singapore.
Who Does NOT Need a K-ETA?
- Citizens of countries that require a Korean visa (they apply for a visa instead)
- Holders of a valid Korean long-term visa (D, E, F, H series) — your visa serves as authorization
- Holders of a valid Korean Alien Registration Card (ARC)
- Diplomatic passport holders (in many cases)
- APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) holders
K-ETA Cost and Validity
- Cost: ₩10,000 (approximately $7.50 USD) per application
- Validity: 2 years from date of approval, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first
- Multiple entries: Yes — a single K-ETA approval allows multiple entries within the 2-year validity period
- Maximum stay per visit: 90 days (or 30 days for some nationalities)
How to Apply for K-ETA: Step by Step
- Go to the official K-ETA website: k-eta.go.kr (English available)
- Click "Apply" and select your nationality
- Enter your passport details exactly as they appear on your passport (case-sensitive — errors cause rejection)
- Upload a clear photo: white background, full face, no glasses, taken within 6 months
- Provide your Korea contact address (hotel name and address is fine)
- Pay ₩10,000 by credit card (international cards accepted)
- Submit — you'll receive an email confirmation immediately
- Check approval status within 72 hours (most approvals come within 24 hours; some take up to 3 business days)
Common Rejection Reasons (and How to Avoid Them)
K-ETA rejection is more common than most people expect. The most frequent causes:
- Name mismatch: Middle names omitted, initials used instead of full name, or name entered in a different order than the passport. Enter your name exactly as it appears on your passport — including all middle names.
- Passport number typo: One wrong character will cause an automatic rejection. Double-check digit by digit.
- Poor photo: Shadows, glasses, hats, or a colored background. Use a plain white background and ensure your full face is clearly visible.
- Previous visa or immigration violation: If you've ever overstayed in Korea, been deported, or had a visa refused, you may be rejected. Apply for a regular tourist visa (C-3) instead with an explanation letter.
- Criminal record: A previous conviction for certain offenses triggers automatic review or rejection.
What to Do If Your K-ETA Is Rejected
K-ETA rejection does not mean you can't visit Korea. Your options:
- Re-apply — if you believe there was a data entry error, correct it and re-apply (you'll pay again)
- Apply for a C-3 Tourist Visa at your nearest Korean consulate — this takes 3–7 business days and costs $40–60 depending on your country
- Contact the Korean consulate for guidance if you believe the rejection was in error
K-ETA and Connecting Flights
If you're connecting through Incheon Airport and leaving within 24 hours without clearing immigration (airside transit), you generally do not need K-ETA. But if you plan to leave the transit area — even briefly — you do.
When in doubt: apply. The cost is minimal and having it eliminates all boarding risk.
